Barrier Bouncing For Hamstring Happiness

Remember when you were a kid and jumping over random objects was just something you did for fun? Nobody asked you to do it, you just saw a fence or a low wall and thought, "Yeah, I can clear that." Well, congratulations – that childhood impulse has been formalized into a legitimate plyometric exercise, and it is every bit as exhausting as you would expect from an adult version of playing hopscotch with obstacles.
Set up a row of low barriers spaced a few feet apart, stand facing the first one with your feet at collarbone width, and then proceed to leap over each one in sequence using both feet simultaneously. The arm swing is critical – your arms generate significant upward force when coordinated properly, and without them you are leaving free centimeters on the table. Land softly on the other side, absorb the impact through flexed knees, and then immediately bounce into the next jump without pausing to contemplate your life choices.
The continuous bouncing is what makes this a genuine plyometric challenge rather than a casual jumping drill. Your posterior chain – hamstrings, glutes, calves – has to produce force rapidly on each ground contact, and the brief amortization phase between landing and takeoff trains your stretch-shortening cycle in a way that slow, controlled movements simply cannot replicate.
This is a fantastic option for athletes who need reactive strength and elastic power – think basketball players, sprinters, volleyball athletes, or anyone whose sport involves repeated jumping. Scale the barrier height to your ability, prioritize landing quality over speed, and remember that the goal is springy, not stompy. Light feet, big hops, and try not to clip the top of those barriers unless you enjoy dramatic face-plants.
