Let us take a moment to appreciate the glute bridge – an exercise so fundamental that it practically serves as the gateway drug to all posterior chain training. Now, let us make it significantly more interesting by strapping a resistance band over your hips and anchoring it to a squat rack, because apparently lying on the floor and lifting your pelvis was not entertaining enough without something actively trying to crush you back down.

The setup requires some creativity. You lie in the middle of a power rack with the band secured on either side – if your rack lacks pegs, heavy dumbbells work as anchors, provided they are heavy enough to stay put and not launch across the gym when the band tension releases. Position the band directly over your hip crease, bend your knees, plant your feet flat, and then drive through your heels to elevate your pelvis against the band's resistance.

What makes the banded version superior to the unresisted variation is the overload at the top. In a standard bridge, the glutes get very little stimulus at full hip extension because the lever arm essentially disappears. The band fixes this beautifully by increasing resistance precisely where the glutes are strongest, giving you a meaningful contraction at the peak rather than a leisurely vacation.

Pause at the top for a full second – really squeeze those glutes like you are crushing walnuts – and then lower under control. This exercise is perfect as a glute activation drill before heavier training or as a standalone movement for beginners building baseline strength. Either way, your posterior will send you a strongly worded thank-you note within forty-eight hours.
