Every now and then, someone at the gym decides to flip their grip on a familiar movement and suddenly half the regulars are staring like they've just witnessed a crime. The underhand slanted press is exactly that kind of move — it looks weird, it feels weird at first, and it works muscles in ways that make you question everything you thought you knew about pressing mechanics.

Set up facing a raised bar on a Smith machine or stable ledge, but instead of the standard overhand hold where your fingers wrap over the top, you flip your palms upward and grip from underneath. Walk your feet back into that familiar angled plank position and begin lowering your torso toward the bar by bending your arms. Press back to the start by straightening those arms. Simple concept, radical grip change.

The supinated hand position fundamentally alters which fibers receive the most stimulus. In standard pressing, the emphasis skews toward the lower portion of your front shelf and your triceps. Flip those palms, and suddenly the upper region of your front shelf gets significantly more activation along with your biceps, which are now in a mechanically advantageous position to contribute. It's not going to replace conventional pressing as your primary mass builder, but as a supplemental variation that hits different corners of the target musculature, it's surprisingly effective. Think of it as the hot sauce on your pressing meal — not the main course, but it adds a dimension that would be missing otherwise. Approach with slightly lighter intensity than your standard sets, focus on feeling the contraction in the right places, and don't be surprised if your biceps are sore the next day in a way they normally aren't from pressing work.
